Beware! Do you also suffer from ‘brain rot’? Mobile addiction is weakening memory and concentration.

Date:

The term “brain rot” is being heard frequently these days. It means being online so much that it negatively impacts the brain. The fatigue, irritability, or distraction that comes after hours of scrolling through social media is also being associated with this term. Experts believe that while this term may seem light-hearted, it hides a serious truth.

Many people are now having difficulty concentrating. Those who used to read a book comfortably now lose focus after just a few pages. A major reason for this is smartphones and constant notifications, which constantly distract the mind. Research shows that watching short videos on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube Shorts can affect our concentration, memory, and mental health. The habit of constantly changing topics and constantly scrolling prevents the brain from focusing on one thing for long.

According to MIT researcher Natalia Kosmina, it’s difficult for people to watch even a 20-minute video today because the brain has become accustomed to short content. However, there’s still no consensus on the long-term impact. Some research suggests that changes have been observed in certain parts of the brain in people with excessive screen time, but it’s unclear whether this is the cause or the effect.

A study published in 2025, which examined more than 7,000 children, found that excessive screen time can reduce the thickness of the brain’s outer layer, the cortex. This part helps with thinking, remembering, and making decisions. Furthermore, excessive screen time also impacts sleep. Children and adolescents, in particular, often use their phones late into the night, depriving them of adequate sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation can also impact brain development. However, experts also say that not all types of screen time are harmful. What you’re doing on the screen makes a difference.

A study of AI chatbots found that students who use them excessively learn less and don’t retain what they’ve written. This is because the brain is less active. Experts recommend using screens in a balanced manner. Stay away from your phone before bed, delete unnecessary apps, and use technology wisely.
