After lunch, our eyes suddenly become heavy and we lose focus. Many people experience this feeling of lethargy shortly after eating. This is commonly referred to as postprandial drowsiness. It’s not always a sign of illness. The body’s natural clock, the amount of food consumed, and the ingredients in the food may play a role.

During the afternoon, the body’s 24-hour clock changes, reducing the wakefulness signal. This is why many people may feel lethargic in the afternoon even if they haven’t eaten. This effect can be exacerbated after eating.

If the lunch is too large or too heavy, the sleepiness and lethargy may increase. This effect can be exacerbated by foods that are particularly high in calories, fried foods, or foods high in sweets and white flour. Several digestive changes occur in the body after eating. These final signals, changes in blood glucose and other nutrients, and changes in the brain’s wakefulness signals, can combine to create a sleepy feeling. It’s often said that after eating, all the blood goes to the stomach, and this reduces blood supply to the brain, leading to sleepiness. However, this isn’t considered the correct and complete explanation. The drowsiness that comes after eating is due to the combined effects of several physiological processes.

If you haven’t slept enough the night before, you may feel more drowsy after lunch. The body’s need for sleep increases with prolonged sleep. Therefore, getting adequate and good sleep is essential to remain alert during the day.

Eating a balanced and appropriate meal can be helpful instead of eating a heavy meal. Taking a short, light walk after meals can also help reduce drowsiness. Drinking water and getting a good night’s sleep are also important. If you feel excessively sleepy, dizzy, or weak after eating every day, or if this problem is affecting your daily activities, it is better to consult a doctor. Sometimes, persistent excessive sleepiness can also be seen in association with sleep problems, anemia, thyroid, or blood sugar related problems.
