Election rhetoric is heating up in West Bengal politics ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, addressing a massive public gathering on Red Road in Kolkata on Saturday, launched a scathing attack on the BJP government at the center. The All India Trinamool Congress supremo alleged that the BJP is hatching a deep conspiracy to snatch the people’s right to vote in the name of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader categorically stated that she will fight to the end to protect Bengal’s democratic identity and the rights of citizens. Mamata Banerjee’s statement comes at a time when political tensions are high over the deletion of names from voter lists in minority-dominated areas of the state.
The Chief Minister of Bengal questioned the SIR process, calling it a means of influencing the electoral process. She claimed that this exercise deliberately removes the names of a specific class of voters from the electoral rolls. Addressing the crowd, Mamata Banerjee stated that her party would strongly oppose any attempt to deprive anyone of their right to vote in the name of verification. She stated that any attempt to violate the constitutional rights of the people of Bengal would not be tolerated.
In her address, Mamata Banerjee cited the state’s communal harmony and accused the BJP of dividing society. She sternly stated that those targeting Bengal and seeking to create a rift between Hindus and Muslims should go to hell. The Chief Minister emphasized that Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians all live in harmony in Bengal. The state will not allow any attempt to disrupt this social fabric to succeed.
The event held on Kolkata’s Red Road not only holds religious significance but is also a major power show in Bengal’s politics. Nearly 30 percent of the state’s voters are Muslims, who hold the power to overturn election results. The TMC is seeking a fourth consecutive term in the 2026 Assembly elections. Meanwhile, the BJP is desperately trying to convert its 2021 lead into victory. Mamata Banerjee has used the Eid festival to unite her core vote bank and create an anti-centralist sentiment.
The 2026 Bengal Assembly elections are a matter of prestige for the Trinamool Congress. Despite BJP rejecting the allegations of irregularities in the voter list, Mamata Banerjee has termed it a ‘fight for survival’. Political analysts believe that this aggressive stance of Mamata is part of a well-planned strategy to enthuse the cadre before the elections and mobilize the voters against the BJP. In the coming days, this dispute over the voter list may turn into a legal and street battle.
