Those booking gas cylinders are being robbed, police reveal scammers’ new tactic; learn how to stay safe.

Amidst reports of gas cylinder shortages, people are desperately trying to book cylinders. Cunning fraudsters have begun taking advantage of this. Delhi Police have uncovered a case of digital fraud where dangerous APK files and phishing links are being sent to people’s mobile phones under the guise of booking cylinders. Scammers are trying their best to defraud people by threatening them with pending KYC or disconnection.

In such a situation, do not download messages or APK files from unknown numbers purporting to book cylinders. These messages allow spammers to remotely gain complete control of your phone and empty your entire account in minutes.

Online scammers have created fake websites impersonating well-known companies like Indane and HP to defraud people. Online fraudsters are sending messages to people via SMS and WhatsApp stating that their KYC or Aadhaar linking is pending.

According to the Delhi Police Crime Branch, these messages trick people into clicking on links and downloading APK files onto their phones. This gives hackers complete control of others’ phones. The police have already blocked several such fake sites, making it crucial for people to remain vigilant.

According to reports, (REF.) In light of the increasing number of fraudulent cases involving cylinder booking, all district heads of the Delhi Police have been instructed to issue a public advisory. The police warn against clicking on any unknown links. The police clearly state that gas companies do not pressure people to download any apps or ask for personal information. If you receive suspicious messages with names like LPG, Indane, or LPG FAST, understand that it’s a scam.

Whether booking an LPG gas cylinder or for any other purpose, the easiest way to avoid online fraud is to never click on any suspicious links. If you receive a message from a number you don’t recognize, ignore it.

If you have any questions about your KYC or Aadhaar linking, seek official information. Try to get accurate information through the gas agency’s numbers or customer care. Don’t rely on WhatsApp messages.

Use only official methods for cylinder booking. You can also book a cylinder by calling or giving a missed call to the gas company’s number. You can also book a cylinder through the gas company’s official app or apps like PhonePe and Google Pay.
Go to your smartphone’s settings and turn off the setting called “Unknown Sources.” When this is turned off, APK files cannot be downloaded from anywhere other than the Google Play Store.
Also, don’t share your banking details with anyone. If you are a victim of financial fraud, immediately call the National Cyber Crime Helpline number 1930. Alternatively, you can also register your complaint at www.cybercrime.gov.in.
